Viharamahadevi Park and Town Hall

Viharamahadevi Park is considered the largest public park in Colombo filled with open recreational spaces, historical monuments like the Cenotaph war memorial and even an open air theatre that hosts many concerts and public events.

  • The park provides a safe haven for the weary, right in the heart of the city, with its lush green vegetation, along with elaborate water fountains and benches to unwind.
  • The separated cycling and jogging tracks attracts many sports and fitness enthusiasts to partake in some early morning or evening run or cycling sessions.
  • More recently, the park has become famous for hosting the Colombo Street Food Festival where you could experience cuisine from all over the world.
  • It is also best known for the monuments and important buildings such as a large Buddha statue, the Cenotaph war memorial, the Colombo public library and the Colombo Municipal Council.

Interesting Facts

  • The park was initially a quarters for the British Army and the Australian 17th Brigade during the Second World War.
  • After the end of the war, it was eventually restored and opened to the public in 1951.
  • As a result, it was renamed ‘Viharamahadevi park’ in honour of King Dutugemu’s mother, Queen Viharamahadevi who is depicted as a heroine in Sri Lankan history, as she willingly sacrificed herself for the prosperity of the Ruhuna Kingdom that existed in the 1st century BC.
  • The Cenotaph war memorial, which is situated at the western end of the park is considered the most recent addition to the park as it was originally located in Galle Face Green. However, it was dismantled during the Second World War and reassembled at the park fearing that the Japanese would use it as a marker for bombing runs.

Times, Seasons and Tips

  • The park is opened throughout the year, but is best experienced during the months of March, April and early May when the trees bloom with colourful flowers.
  • The best time to visit the park is during the weekend mornings or evenings, since the park is filled with a great atmosphere.
  • There are not many rules to follow when in the park, however, your clothing should be conservative and you are not allowed to sit near the Buddha statue just opposite the town hall due to religious reasons.
