Saradiel Village

  • The creator of the village theme park is a doctor by profession, Dr. Ariyasena Gamage, who was passionate in providing a little slice of Sri Lankan history to the public in the most interactive manner.
  • Begun in 2008, the doctor worked tirelessly to recreate the images and dwellings of the old village and it finally became a reality in 2012, when it was open to the public.
  • The village is dedicated to the life and times of a man who is considered to be a hero to a great many Sri Lankan folk, as he is considered to be a symbol of anti-colonialism.
  • Uthuwankande Sura Saradiel was an infamous and notorious rebel that struggled for freedom of oppression from British colonialism during the 19th Century.
  • Along with his partner in crime, Mammale Marikkar, the two were Sri Lanka’s equivalent to notorious outlaws, such as Robin Hood and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, as the duo would ambush unsuspecting rich travellers and merchants for their wealth.
  • Although their riches were distributed to the poor, many were against such acts, thus the reason as to why colonials and elites of the country issued warrants for his arrest.
  • Saradiel and his friend were eventually captured and executed in 1864, however, his legacy has etched its way into the hearts of many a Sri Lankan as a figure of anti-colonialism.
  • The Saradiel Village gives a life-like depiction of the notorious outlaw’s life and times through recreations of the village he lived in during his childhood.

  • Please refrain from bringing any polythene or pollutants to the area, as the complex is a place of rustic grandeur and it will be a shame if such grandeur is destroyed.
  • Should you be the adventure junkie, you could opt to partake in some rock climbing to Uthuwankande (believed to be Saradiel’s hideout).
