  • The Devon Falls is also known for being a landmark resting spot for the weary traveller moving up and down from Colombo and Nuwara Eliya.

Interesting Facts

  • The name of the falls is actually derived from a famous British planter called Devon, whose plantation is close by to the falls.
  • The Devon Falls is ranked the 19th highest waterfall in the country and is a tiered type of waterfall that has three notable drops that starts from a height of 97 metres.
  • More recently, the Devon Falls, like the close by St. Clair’s Falls, have been affected by the Upper Kotmale Hydroelectric Dam and has resulted in the reduction of water flow.
  • The authorities, however, have agreed for the benefit of the public, to allow a limited amount of water to flow out from the dam to maintain the natural aesthetic splendour of the falls.
  • When compared to the St. Clair’s Falls cascade after the construction of the dam, the Devon Falls still retains most of its ferocious flow.

Times, Seasons and Tips

  • The waterfall is operational throughout the year and its cascade never ceases to amaze, even after being affected by the Upper Kotmale Hydroelectric Dam.
  • However, many have reported that the cascade is at its full strength during the month of December.
  • The best and safest way to view the splendour of the waterfall is at the designated viewing point at the Dimbula Road, opposite the Mlesna Tea Centre. Do not worry, there is ample parking space.
  • Do bring your camera along, because the purpose built viewing point gives the perfect opportunity to grab some awe inspiring images of the falls.
  • There are a few optional ways where you can venture close to the falls, however, it is best to ask a local or an experienced tour guide to help you out, since it can be quite dangerous.

All in all, the Devon Falls, with its ferocious cascade and its evergreen surroundings, high in the mountains of the picturesque hill country of Sri Lanka, proves to be just one of the many amazing waterfalls on the Paradise Island.
