The Doctor’s House

Roughly a 2 and a half hour drive from cosmopolitan Colombo will take you to ‘Doctor’s House’, a hostel which echoes with a fun, tropical speak and a zest for life; ‘eat, drink, stay and play’, is the tagline and concept around which the hostel is focused, wittingly presented as ‘a doctor’s prescription’ to the discerning traveller. Step through the village bustle and make your way through the doors of the 200 year old former Dutch and Ayurvedic hospital, now converted into a beachside accommodation in Matara, a trendy hub of fun and entertainment, where coastal vibes meet merriment: here’s inviting you into ‘The Doctor’s House’.

Best Known For

A laid-back, no fuss vibe, where a rustic and minimalistic theme heightens one’s enjoyment of all that’s offered. The accommodation offerings at ‘The Doctor’s House’ boast of a refreshing balance of minimalistic luxury and nature, crafting up one’s own little respite, away from the bustle yet at the same time at walking distance to the restaurant cum marketplace where vacational bliss and rambunctious cheer spills across its tropical gardens.

The Experience

One has a choice between dorms and bungalows for accommodation. A six-bed dorm and three four-bed dorms comprise bunk beds, fans, mosquito nets and storage spaces and share an outdoor bathroom, blending in nature with rustic aesthetic. The two private bungalows are appointed with a queen-size bed, mosquito net, fan, private balcony, storage spaces and a somewhat similar outdoor bathroom. Artsy brick and cement walls give off a raw, undone yet aesthetic feel, immersing the traveller in comfort.

Marked as one of the dining highlights at ‘The Doctor’s House’ is the al fresco setting by the Laccadive Sea which the ‘TDH Restaurant’ affords. The breakfast, lunch and dinner menus serve up everything from a burrito range, smoothie bowls to pizza, pasta and vegan options. The bar opens up from 12.00pm to 11.00pm, glassing out beers, cocktails and wines, with a daily happy hour added to the mix.

A chill out area, sprawled under the shade of towering palm trees, is a vacationer’s haven; where bean bags, loungers, swing seats and umbrella tables scatter throughout the gardens. Come night time, the setting is further enriched by the strings of fairy lights and mood music, playing on one’s immediate need and want.

Around and About

A commercial port city in the Southern Province, Matara, to this day, harbours reflections of the isle’s colonial heritage. Historical monuments scatter throughout, such as The Star Fort and the Matara Fort, while temples immerse one in religious significance; the Parawi Duwa Temple and the Werahena Temple. Stroll along the Polhena Beach for a slight change of tropical scenery.
