Two popular waves that emerge out of the sea are aptly named Lazy’s left and Lazy’s right due to its mellow predictable form rising up 5 - 6 feet and up to 500 metres long on a good day. The waves that are experienced by the pristine beaches near this little village are predictable and safe due to its deep and sandy reefs. This setting makes it perfect for surfing, especially if you are a beginner or intermediate surfer looking to hone your skill on the longboard. You are definitely in for a treat when riding the waves during the evenings close to sunset time. Once the sun slowly falls into the ocean and the sky turns into that fiery orange, all you would want to do is sit on your longboard and enjoy the moment and realize how lucky you are to witness such a great natural phenomenon.

Insider Advice

Travel: Getting about in Midigama is very easy as there is just one attraction, the great surfing beaches. You could also walk or rent a motorbike for around LKR 800 - LKR 1,000 a day (can be arranged by your hostel).

Weather: Midigama generally experiences tropical climate all year round, however, the best time to make the most of that tropical weather is between the months of November to March when the sky is clear and the waves at the beach are perfect for surfing.

Money: Apart from the hostels and certain surf shops, credit or debit cards are almost worthless as many of the shops only accept cash. Therefore, it is important to carry cash with small notes like LKR 20s, LKR 50s and LKR 100s for ease.

Clothing: Beach wear or casual wear is the preferred choice of attire since you will be at the beach for the most part of a day.

Safety: It is a safe place, however, do be mindful of your belongings as it could get misplaced. Just bring as little as possible when going to the beach.
