The Gallery Café

Nestled amongst the leafy gardens of Alfred House Road in Colombo 3, ‘The Gallery Café’ is housed within the stunning former studios of renowned Sri Lankan architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa. The high-end restaurant is famed for its eclectic Ceylonese and Continental offerings, as well as, the sophisticated dessert menu which highlights chocolaty dainties.

The Menu

From the Char-grilled Beef and Green Papaya Salad, Sri Lankan Fish Head Soup and Cream of Gotukola Salad (pennywort) that brims with Eastern flavour, to the Zucchini Soup and the Tabbouleh Salad bristling with Mediterranean tangs and the traditional Caesar Salad prepped-up in Mexican fashion, each Salad and Soup classic at ‘The Gallery Café’ spells out class. An array of starters highlights indulgent names, such as the Goat Cheese Tart, Chicken Liver Pate and Baked Crab.

From acres of rice fields, coconut groves and herb gardens, to fishing villages flourishing on sunny shores, the Sri Lankan culinary arena is an orchestra of flavour, aroma and colour. Fascinated by its appreciation of the coconut cream, curry leaf and saffron, ‘The Gallery Café’ crafts up exotic dishes of the isle, including the Black Pork Curry, Beef Smore and Prawn Curry. Inspired by Continental gastronomy which is famed for its abundance of sauces, cheeses and wheat flour based offerings, this fine dining restaurant in Colombo perfects many a delectable Western recipe. From luscious meat treats, such as the Coq Au Vin, Pork Schnitzel and Spaghetti with Beef and decadent oceanic delights, such as Seafood Risotto and Grilled Lobster, to vegetarian delicacies like Spinach Crepes and Feta Ravioli, choices are aplenty. Transformed into a gorgeous gallery and restaurant by the high-end design brand, ‘Paradise Road’, Geoffrey Bawa’s beloved town office, today, crafts the perfect setting for a stylish respite in the cosmopolitan gardens of Colombo. Gracefully converted to retain Bawa’s signature architectural style, the charcterful oasis features courtyards, reflecting ponds and alcoves. Clad in earthy hues, the interior dining hall features atmospheric décor whilst the al fresco seating areas are furnished with visually-captivating tables and chairs. The galleries that entertain monthly rotating exhibitions of artistic flair, highlighting designs by budding local artists, add to the charm.

As you walk in, frangipanis rustle about; a softly-sung welcome. Order the Lemongrass and Ginger Chicken and dine under the constellations that share their light with the earth.
