The Biryani Restaurant

Nestled amongst the bustling, sun-soaked surroundings of Armour Street in Colombo 12, ‘The Biryani Restaurant’ serves up fragrant Biryani classics, at its saffron-scented dining halls.

The Menu

Biryani, a tropical rice preparation recipe, was dreamed up at the culinary strongholds of the Indian Subcontinent, centuries before. An eclectic mishmash of cooked rice, meats and veggies, Biryani hosts exotic herb and spice combinations, which give the dish a fragrant edge. From a classic Sunday meal at the culture-soaked households of Hindustan, to a special-occasion treat in Europe, the striking rice offering has made headway in the global culinary map. Embraced by different communities through many centuries, today, a myriad of distinctive Biryani recipes flourish across India, each highlighting its own seasoning, orchestrated with the likes of cinnamon, cardamom, clove, bay leaves, coriander, turmeric and ginger.

Keeping alive this golden culinary tradition from its neighbouring nation, ‘The Biryani Restaurant’ crafts up hand-picked Biryani recipes. The crown dish, Hyderabadi Dum Chicken Biryani is prepared in the traditional Katchi style - basking cooked rice and raw chicken marinade in a slow-cooking-dum, to retain its moisture and flavour. The Kerala Fish Biryani from the coast of Malabar is whipped up in Pakistani style - rustling up cooked fish between layers of rice. Embodying the spirit of Kashmiri gastronomy, the saffron-infused Kashmiri Vegetable Biryani is highly fragrant and mild in flavour. A timeless Indian culinary offering, the Mumbai Spicy Prawn Biryani swathes succulent servings of prawn in spicy seasoned rice while the Fried Chaat Chicken Biryani serves up a medley of gastronomic flavours. Hailing from Awadh’s lush kitchens, the Calcutta Mutton Biryani presents melt-in-the-mouth mutton chunks on a bed of long fragrant rice, bristling with notes of ghee.

The Experience

A laid-back oasis to taste authentic Biryani in Colombo, ‘The Biryani Restaurant’ takes up a two-floor building on Armour Street. The dining halls are nestled upstairs whilst downstairs is occupied by a bustling take-out counter. High-ceilinged and muraled, the interiors rejoice in a soft colour palette. Spaciously laid out to entertain 120 patrons, this Indian restaurant in Colombo is a perfect place to host private parties and business functions.

Biryani, a promise of sunny notes and cascading aromas; an evergreen classic in India, a mini-luxury in the tropical isle…
